Vijay Diwas

 

Vijay Diwas commemorates the victory of the Indian Armed Forces leading to the historic surrender of over 93000 Pakistani soldiers and liberation of Bangladesh on 16 Dec 1971. Vijay Diwas epitomizes the dogged resolve of our Nation and the fortitude of the determined warriors of our Armed Forces as also serves as a poignant reminder of their supreme sacrifices. The 41st anniversary of the war was commemorated to honour all our revered colleagues, our brave soldiers, sail-ors, airmen and civilians, who participated in this historic military feat and those, who in the line of duty made the supreme sacrifice. The credit for the success of Indian victory in 1971 Indo-Pak war goes to the Indian Armed Forces lightning offensive which out maneuvered the enemy.

Homage was paid to the gallant soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, during a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. The six commands also organized functions in a dignified manner to commemorate the event.

Exercise Sahyog 2012

 

Lt Gen Gyan Bhushan, GOC-in-C, South Western Command witnessed the culmination of Ex Sahyog 2012 recently. The exercise was conducted jointly between an Indian and Kazakhastan battalion each. During the visit, he witnessed firing and specialised skills training of the Battalion. The Army Commander addressed the troops in a Special Sanik Sammelan and highlighted the need for operational readiness and also appreciated the jointness of both the battalions.

 

Transfer of Authority in Lebanon

 

A rare and momentous day for PUNJAB Infantry Battalion group was celebrated as they were given the distinguished honour of carrying the Indian Flag under the aegis of the United Nation Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). To mark this occasion, a ceremony of transfer of authority was held, wherein UN Flag was handed over from RAJPUT infantry battalion group to PUNJAB infantry battalion group in a befitting military parade. The occasion was graced by Brigadier General Manuel Romero Carril of the Italian Army and a large number of Civil and Military officials.

 

Christmas in Congo

 

North Kivu Brigade as part of MONUSCO celebrated Christmas with the locals of Goma town in Congo. Brigadier General CB Ponnappa, Commander North Kivu Brigade, alongwith Coomanding Officer INDBATT1 visited 164 orphans at Bon Samaritian Orphanage and distributed chocolates and sweets. Thereafter, a lunch was organised for the children by INDBATT1. This endeavour will go a long way in cementing bonds with the locals.

 

Basantar Day Commemorated

 

Basantar Day was celebrated to commemorate the famous Battle of Basantar, which took place in 1971 at Basantar River in Shakargarh Bulge, Pakistan. During the course of operations, successive counter attacks on captured enemy positions were repulsed by own troops and heroic acts of highest order were displayed by Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, PVC(Posthumous) and Major (later Colonel) Hoshiar Singh, PVC. A light and sound show depicting the battles of Basantar, Saraj Chack and Jarpal was mounted with dexterity. On this occasion the martyrs were remembered and a musical evening was organized.

 

ESM Rally at Didwana

 

Ranbankura Division organised an Ex Servicemen Rally at Didwana in District Nagaur, Rajasthan on 23 December 2012. The Rally addressed the pension related issues and provided medical aid to more than 6,000 Ex-Servicemen and Veer Naris. During the Rally a large number of awareness and assistance stalls were set up by various Record Offices, Government and Non-Government Departments and Banks. Modified scooters, wheelchairs and tricycles were distributed to the physically challenged Ex Servicemen.

 

Motivational Lectures

 

A de-novo initiative was undertaken by Sarvada Agrani Brigade for motivating students to join the Armed Forces. Motivational lectures enhancing the image of Indian Army were delivered by Commanding Officers of the Brigade at schools and colleges located at Bath-inda, Patiala and Mathura. Besides college under-graduates, students studying in classes IX to XII were the target audience. During the lectures publicity ma-terial containing details pertaining to various entry schemes alongwith pay scales were distributed amongst the students. Young, dynamic and impres-sionable teenagers were clearly motivated to consider Indian Army as a career option.

 

Yoga Shivir

 

A Digvijay Yoga Shivir was organised recently for all officers, ladies, JCOs/ OR and families of the Fleur-De-Lis Brigade. It was conducted by persons from the Pattanjali Yoga Peeth, Pathankot. The aim of this Yoga Shivir was to educate all ranks, ladies and families regarding Yoga and its benefits. An interactive session was carried out with the persons of Pattanjali Yoga Peeth, in which the gathering was educated on different herbs that are readily available in our surroundings and their health benefits. Yoga Shivir was able to generate consciousness among the gathering towards their health.

 

Defence Pension Adalat at Lansdowne

 

Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pension) organized a Defence Pension Adalat (DPA) for the entire region of Uttarakhand and adjoining areas recently. The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, Lansdowne (UK) got a unique opportunity to conduct the same after a period of 14 years. Despite the inclement weather, the adalat got an overwhelming response from all corners of the hill state. A total number of 456 complaints were registered, out of which 131 complaints were solved on the spot by the concerned agencies.

 

First Day Cover Released by Arunachal Governor

 

First day cover of 7 MARATHA LI was released in a grand function by General (Retired) JJ Singh, Governor Arunachal Pradesh, on the occasion of the golden Jubilee celebrations of the battalion. The battalion was raised by Lt Col ML Dixit in 1963 and has served with distinction in an array of theatres across the country. The first day cover is a saga of the ardent loyalty, dedication and resolve of the battalion to serve the country unflinchingly in the last 50 years.

 

Army Mela at Amritsar

 

An Army Mela was organized at Amritsar on 17 Dec 2012, which saw almost 15000 veterans and students in atten-dance from across Punjab. Twenty nine differently abled veteran soldiers were provided modified Honda Activa scooters as also sixty veer naris were felicitated. 2000 students from 35 Schools, across Gurdaspur, Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts, converged to see the display. The cultural show comprising of martial music by resplen-dently attired Army Bands, Kalaripayattu and Malkhamb kept the crowds engrossed for over an hour. The “Awareness and Entrepreneurship” kiosks provided an opportunity for the veterans to know about the new Welfare Schemes.

 

Ex-servicemen rally at Alwar

 

An Ex-servicemen rally was organized recently on behalf of the Strategic Strikers at Alwar Military Station. The aim of the rally was to create awareness in the environment regarding benefits being made available to the veterans and also to provide a platform for ESM to project their grievances. A total of 550 ESM including Veer Naris and War Widows alongwith their dependants attended the rally.

 

Veteran’s Mela on Vijay Diwas

 

A veterans Army Mela and rally was organized at Tezpur to commemorate Vijay Diwas. The Mela was preceded by a solemn ceremony to pay homage to the martyrs. Officers and men of Gajraj Corps laid wreath at the War Memorial to remember the sacrifice of all those brave soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice. The Mela was attended by over 500 Ex- Servicemen including Veer Naries and their families from nine Divisional Ex-Servicemen associations of Sonitpur District. A pension adalat and a medical camp were also organized.

 

RAISING DAYS

 

254th Raising Day of The Madras Regiment

 

Raised on 4th Dec 1758 by Sir Robert Clive at Fort St. George, the Madras Regimental Centre celeberated 254th Raising Day of the Madras Regiment at Wellington re-cently, with full pomp and gaiety. The celebrations started with the Commandant, Brigadier S Suresh Kumar, VSM laying a wreath at the War memorial. This was followed by Special Sainik Sammelan, Blood Donation Camp, Bara-khana and Pagal Gymkhana. The Centre Commandant exhorted all ranks to emulate the outstanding standards set by their illustrious and selfless martyrs who laid down their lives to uphold the honour of the Regiment and the Indian Army. The festivities were attended by a number of serving and retired soldiers of the Regiment. The Regiment has to its credit a host of Gal-lantry Awards including 1 AC, 05 MVCs, 11 KCs, 36 VRCs and 35 SCs.

Celebration Of World Disabled Day

 

World Disabled Day was celebrated by Chetak Asha School Children on at Bathinda Cantonment. The 'Special Children' gave a scintillating and heart touching performance. Children of Chetak Asha School won13 Individual Medals (six gold, one silver and six bronze) in 15th Punjab Special Olympics held at Sangrur. The mission of these schools is to enable Special Children to live independently and learn self sustenance.

 

 

Annual Function at Suranussi

 

More than 100 students showcased their talent at the second annual day function of Ordnance Army Pri-Primary School at Suranussi. The theme was aptly selected as “Grandparents” who play a great role in the development of tiny tots, and accordingly grandparents were the special invitees of the event. As kids narrated stories of their grandparents, the audience was left overwhelmed.

 

World AIDS Day Lecture

 

On the occasion of World AIDS Day, an exhibition cum quiz was organized for over 200 students of 8th to 12th standard of APS at Clement Town recently. The theme of the event was “Getting to Zero- Zero discrimination, Zero dissemination and Zero AIDS related deaths”. Posters, charts and pamphlets were used to impart knowledge to the students and inform them about the present trends in the spread of the disease.
