The Rajput Regiment
 

History of the Rajput Regiment begins with the enrolment of Indians by the East India Company into the Army in the year 1778. 3 RAJPUT was the first Bn to be raised as 31st (later changed to 24th ) Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) at Cawnpore (Kanpur). Ist and 2nd Battalions were raised in 1798 as 2/15 and 2/16 BNI, and 4th and 5th Battalions were raised as 1/30 BNI and 2nd Extra Regt in 1815 and 1825 respectively.

All the five battalions participated in 19th Century campaigns. The Regiment won 29 Battle Honours during the Pre – First World War Era. 3rd and 5th Battalions took part in the Chinese War of 1858 – 60. In 1858, the Regiment of Lucknow (16 RAJPUT) was raised. It was awarded ‘Lucknow’ as the Battle Honour. It was later redesignated as 16 RAJPUT and became the Training Centre at Fatehgarh in 1921. All the six Battalions of the Regiment participated in the First World War. They won 38 gallantry awards and five Battle Honours.

During the World War II, the Regiment fought in Burma, Egypt, Japan and North Africa. During this period, 6,7,8,14,15 and 17 Battalions were raised. Of these 14th and 17th Battalions were retained and rest were demobilised after the War. The Regiment won 239 gallantry awards and seventeen Battle Honours.

In 1947, three Rajput battalions were in J & K. 1 RAJPUT while holding defence at Naushera came under heavy attack by Pakistanis. Naik Jadunath Singh displayed immortal courage and was awarded PVC (Posthumous). Naushera and Zojila were awarded as Battle Honours to the Bn. In 1954, the state forces of Bikaner and Jodhpur joined The Regiment and were raised as 19 RAJPUT and 20 RAJPUT (Now 24 MECH INF) respectively. 4th and 20th Battalions took part in the liberation of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1961. During the Chinese aggression, 2 and 4 RAJPUT fought gallantly in NEFA.The period 1962 to 1965 saw the raising of 5th 6th, 15th, 16th, and 18th Battalions. During the Indo – Pak War 1965, six of the Battalions took active part. The Regiment won 11 gallantry awards.

21 and 22 Battalions were raised in 1966. In September 1967, 18 RAJPUT (Now 13 MECH INF) while deployed at Nathu La Pass beat back the Chinese attack. In the Indo – Pak war 1971, fourteen Battalions participated in various operations. Six battalions took part in the liberation of Bangladesh and remainder in the Western and Northern Sectors. The Regiment won 39 gallantry awards and five Battle Honours. Between 1976 to 1988, five more Battalions were raised viz 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 RAJPUT. During “OP PAWAN” three Battalions of the Regiment formed part of Indian Peace Keeping Force and won seven gallantry awards. In “OP Vijay” (Kargil) 3 & 27 RAJPUT lived up to the traditions of the Regiment and won six gallantry awards. 28 RAJPUT, 29 RAJPUT and 30 RAJPUT were raised in Sep 2009, Sep 2011 & Jul 2015 respectively. 29 RAJPUT was converted to 29 PARA in Feb 2016. Today the Regiment has 20 active Infantry Battalions, 04 Rashtriya Rifles Battalions, 02 Territorial Army Battalions and One Special Task Force.

Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE was the first Indian Colonel of the Regiment. Other prominent Colonels of RAJPUT Regiment including Lt Gen Ranjeet Singh Dyal, PVSM, MVC (well known for capture of Haji Pir) and Lt Gen VK Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, ADC former Chief of Army Staff. Lt Gen RJ Noronha, PVSM, AVSM**, SM, ADC is the 16th Colonel of the Regiment. The Regiment boasts of 50 Battle Honours before independence, 08 Battle Honours and 02 Theatre Honour post independence making it one of the highest decorated Indian Army Infantry Regiment. After Independence, the Regiment has achieved accolades being honoured with 01 PVC, 02 AC, 11 MVC, 15 KC, 66 VrC, 51 SC and 14 YSM, amongst a host of other decorations and awards.

The men of the Regiment are primarily drawn from UP, Rajasthan, MP, Haryana and Bengal. “Bol Bajrang Bali Ki jai” is the Regimental cry and “Sarvatra Vijay” is the motto of the Regiment.
